The Migrants

They came to our Country to help us out
When England got bombed we gave them a shout
They expected good homes water and food
Instead we were racist, cruel and rude
They left their homes and families for us
We bullied their race and kicked up a fuss
They sailed on a boat from overseas
We turned them to victims we were the bullies
They lent us a hand and good for them!

Picture

I picture a light taking me up
A heart on a bed, a tear filled cup
The radiant glow of the candles alight
The wind howls all through the night
The ghost of my sister whispers to me
As I count the pills, one, two, three
Three white tablets rest in my palm
I feel sleepy and drowsy, pretty calm
As I fall onto the bed, I picture a beam
A smile, so bright, a glass so clean
All the pictures of my life
Suddenly ended by the strike of a knife!

I Was Here

This is my time capsule
My own part of me
Stored in this secret draw
For everyone to see

Years in the future
You will come across these words
That contain all my loves and joys
My secret fear of birds

The fact that I love chocolate
Can’t live without my pets
Love them so much
Hope they never see the vets

Have a fear of the dentist
As he opens your jaw wide
I’m bad at deciding
Can’t choose whichever side

I love writing in my diary
Scribbling down stories
Give me an idea
A name a place, please

So years in the future
When I am long gone
I hope someone will pick this up
And find me through this song.

Where The Heart Is

There are so many movies
So what can I say?
Most of them I've loved
Till this very day
But one particular one
Sticks in my mind
It's such a great movie
So very rare to find
'Where The Heart Is'
What a beautiful movie
Meet Novalee Nation
She's kind and groovy
She's pregnant with a baby
But only sixteen or so
Left on the side of the road
She's got no where to go
She lives in the Wal Mart
For six or seven weeks
She lives off the food they sell
Crisps, cakes and sweets
But poor unselfish Novalee
Does a very good deed
She keeps track of all she eats
So she can pay off her greed
She almost gives birth in the shop
But is saved by a mysterious man
She gets her life back on track
It's sorted, with a plan
After a lot more complications
Happiness, sadness and tears
Novalee has beaten
So many of her fears
Her baby young Americus
Her boyfriend young Forney
The ending is magical
If not a little corny.

In The Mind

It's all in the mind
You bigots say
You can get through this
You can live another day
Hold your chin up
Laugh and smile
It'll disappear
After a while
I've had a bad day too
I'm feeling rather down
Wipe away your tears
Erase that stupid frown
 People take medication
For heart disease and pain
So what's the difference
If it's a fault in the brain?
It's hidden in your head
It's locked in your mind
Maybe one day
You'll wake up and find
The cure to being well
The key to happy days
But for now ignore
All the bigots say.

Personal Statement

I have loved English and Creative Writing from a very young age. I am fascinated by the way you can escape from everyday life into books, or construct your own world with creative writing. I am a motivated and enthusiastic student, and have been writing in my spare time for many years. In 2009 I wrote a 250 page fiction novel which drove me to continue with my creative writing as the sense of achievement I felt after finishing it both inspired and influenced my passion for creative writing. I also recently finished my second novel, which has been accepted to be published by Publish America. The novel focuses on the issues of a teenage girl living in a dysfunctional family. Both writing the novel and having it accepted for publication has developed my love of writing further. I am studying A-level English Literature, Sociology and English Language at college. In English Literature I have particularly enjoyed reading Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte as I felt I could engage with the text and its complex themes. My coursework on Henrik Ibsen and Oscar Wilde gave me the chance to explore my ideas and knowledge of Victorian literature. The skills I have developed from completing the coursework include time management and analytical skills. I have very much enjoyed Sociology, especially the topics on Marxism as it has added to my skills of evaluating the way society works and I feel I can apply this to my creative writing skills. The English Language course has been very interesting, because I have learnt lots of new writing styles, which I can apply to my creative writing. The topics on language change and where different words originate from has been particularly enthralling, as I feel I have been able to add new words to my vocabulary and question where lexis used in the 21st century comes from. Whilst completing my Level 3 Award in Journalism I enhanced my non-fiction writing quality, which I then used in my work for The Daily Echo during my work placement there.
I have written numerous articles on the blog site Wordpress, and one of my articles was published in the college magazine. This influenced my self-belief when writing a diverse range of writing styles and for different purposes. Due to the banding system at school I was unable to take English Literature as a GCSE subject; I therefore opted for self study and passed with a grade B.

I have taken part in various poetry competitions in the past, for example Winchester Library Poetry Cafe, where I won second prize and I have also had poetry and prose published in anthologies with Young Writers and also with the magazine Wordsmith. I won first prize for the Totton College 2012 Creative Writing competition. I was lucky enough to have one of my poems put onto an audio CD and in a textbook, for GCSE pupils in France learning English. This achievement motivated me to continue with my writing.
Alongside my academic achievements I have also completed two weeks work experience at The Southern Daily Echo in 2010 and I had several articles published in the newspaper. I also read out the Daily Sixty Second News on their website. This enhanced my communication skills and confidence. I returned to The Daily Echo in August 2012 for another seven days. This demonstrates my commitment and enjoyment within writing and publishing. I am also employed by Southampton Young Inspectors. We are a group of teenagers who evaluate and inspect services for young people, such as youth clubs and activity centres. Our aim is to help to make positive changes to the community. Being involved in this organisation has developed my social skills and provided inspiration for some of my writing ideas, such as character ideas and topics.

I would say that overall I am a motivated, hardworking and dedicated student, with a passion for writing and a love of reading and I hope to join you in September 2013.

Commentary for short story
My short story ‘Puzzles’ is a dark fiction genre with slight elements of gothic horror used in various places, for example: ‘Blood bubbles at the surface and seeps out. It drips onto the soft cream carpets and makes a scarlet stain’. This line describes the bully as their wrist that has been slit, drips blood onto the floor. The gothic themes of blood, self destruction and death are present here. The use of contrasting colours-red blood and cream carpets symbolises the loss of innocence, this is classic gothic genre. The atmosphere of the story is dark and dangerous; the bully describes the vivid memories of their experiences as they tore apart the victim’s life.
The story is telling the experience of a bully, whose victim has committed suicide. As the bully visits the victim’s house they break down with guilt and shame. The narrative is first person; the character uses the term ‘I’ thoroughly throughout the story and also ‘you’, when they are talking about the victim.
The tense is past and present, it switches throughout the story. For example ‘I jump up from the floor and charge out of the room’ this sentence is set in present tense, however ‘You had been smiling, laughing, at a joke’, this sentence is set in past tense, to give the reader the feel that the narrator is reminiscing and feeling nostalgic about the past.
Techniques I used to create my short story include metaphors ‘but I had to go and break the puzzle, pick apart the pieces’.  This metaphor gives the impression that the victim’s life is a puzzle that is being picked apart by the bully. Another metaphor I used was ‘A waterfall of anger had washed over me, drenched my soul in bitterness.’ This metaphor is effective in giving the reader a mental image of the anger drenching the narrator.
I use rhetorical questions throughout the story ‘Why was your life on track when mine was falling apart?’ This question is directed to the reader from the narrator (the bully). It is used to emphasise the feelings and emotions of the bully and to get the reader’s views and opinions flowing. The story is set primarily in the victim’s bedroom as the bully ponders over their memories of the girls’ friendship before it fell apart.
I used many adjectives such as ‘shiny and glossy’ to describe the penknife the bully uses to cut their wrist. I also personified the knife by referring to it as a ‘friend’ and ‘my enemy’. The verb ‘glistens’ also has positive connotations implying that death is to be welcomed.  I used adjectives to ensure the story was vivid and descriptive for the reader, also to set the scene and to convey emotions.
I used ellipsis at the end of the story to leave the ending open to the reader. Although it is fairly clear that the bully is dying, as they have slit their wrist and quoted ‘I am over…, we are over’, there is no definite evidence that they have died, which leaves the reader pondering over the story.
There is lexical field of pain and suffering- ‘bruises’, ‘punches’, ‘red marks’, ‘scars’ and ‘pain’ this shows that the victim is suffering physical pain and also psychological pain that comes with the ordeal of physical pain.
